Hello from Cape Town!
Today we finally got to sleep in! Breakfast, however, came with its first little crisis: two and a half bags of toast disappeared in no time. Oh well — we survived just fine; there were still a few wraps left.
After that, we set off for Muizenberg Beach! There, we met up with the learners from Manenberg and kicked off the day with a view of the ocean and a quick photo session (okay, maybe not that quick…). After what felt like a thousand pictures, we climbed into three minibuses and headed to the Cape of Good Hope — also known as the end of the world. It wasn’t just us who were amazed by the breathtaking view — even the Manenberg girls, who actually live not far from here, were seeing it for the very first time.
After countless (and honestly unnecessary) photo stops — and lots of “helping hands” (don’t ask 🤔) — we finally made it up to the lighthouse. The climb was tough, but the view at the top was absolutely worth it. From up there, we could see “the end of the world” stretching out below us and even watched tiny lizards sunbathing on the rocks.
Then we walked back down toward the water, where we had tons of fun together. To the horror of Ms Wolff and the South African teachers, Russel and Jona decided to climb a ridiculously high rock — completely without safety gear — just to take a few daring photos.
At the Cape itself, we took the mandatory group photo in front of the sign marking the south-westernmost point of the African continent. We even spotted seals, antelopes, and ostriches roaming freely nearby. On our way back, we stopped along one of the most beautiful roads in the world — Chapman’s Peak Drive — and once again soaked up the stunning South African landscape.
A bit tired from all the hiking up and down, we planned to grab dinner at a food and craft market in Hout Bay. But when we got there, we found out it was already closed — apparently, it doesn’t open on Saturday evenings. Classic.
So the evening ended just as spontaneously as it began: since the restaurant was closed, Jona and Noah took charge of the kitchen and cooked their legendary cheese gnocchi with (a lot of) cheese sauce for everyone.
With a bit of help from Muriel, Mr Dohmen, and Greta, they bravely defeated their final boss: the kitchen.
And to finish off, here’s our quiz of the day: What’s the opposite of an antelope?
A pro-lope?
Or just... lope? 😅
